The 1st Annual Race for E.R.A.C.E.

June 18, 2002 - I took all these pictures and scanned them (click to enlarge), so please be nice and Christ-like and don't steal them for another website. Thank you! - Jessica Folkins

While the go-kart racing was interesting, I had more fun watching what was happening on the sidelines. Here's Michael testing out Peter Furler's BMW motorcycle.

Here's Lonnie about to go out onto the race track. Usually someone would do the first few laps, and then they'd switch during one of their mandatory pit stops.

...and here he is in action, driving the dc talk/True Artist Management-sponsored go-kart. It was decorated with logos, checkered designs, and all five .com's.

All for a good cause - the ERACE banner adorned their information booth. Other charities including Habitat for Humanity also benefitted.

Toby and Chad discuss racing strategy, or maybe just the heat and humidity of the day.

Toby fearlessly combats a corner, edging out the Comcast-sponsored kart.

Toby and Chad head back toward the pits after a grueling race. Chad loaned his white long-sleeved shirt to a friend who raced a couple of laps. There was a rule that drivers had to be wearing long sleeves (thus Toby's jean jacket).

Toby and Michael share a laugh as they wait for the celebrity race to start. Toby borrowed Forefront's kart for this race so Michael could drive dc talk's.

Michael braves the first big curve ... before wiping out somewhere later in the course. The celebrity race was the only one he participated in - I guess those karts just don't compare to motorcycles.

Toby crashed too during the celebrity race but they ended up awarding him 2nd place. Or 3rd? It was a little unclear. It's okay, they are all winners!

Chad raced also later in the day, helping dc talk qualify for the finals. Notice the injury to the kart - I wonder who did that?

I couldn't help but snap a few shots of the Tait members on their bikes as the whole posse prepared to leave for the day. Do you think Lonnie noticed?

Chad looks incredibly happy and right at home.... much more comfortable than in that tiny go-kart.

Mike's laughing at his own 'yee-haw' outburst. All of those bikes zooming off at the same time made quite the racket.

All in all, I was very impressed with the event, considering it was the first one. They plan to do it again next year, and you can be sure my camera and I will be there again! Be sure to keep checking these sites for more info:
